Launch of the “AirPortMover” Project

Enge-Sande, 29.01.2019 – The beginning of December saw the launch of the “AirPortMover” project. The aim of the project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) as part of its special programme “New vehicle and system technologies” is the development of autonomous, electrically driven utility vehicles for application at airports and on airport aprons.

The use of existing autonomous vehicles at airports is not currently possible, as the systems are not designed for the requirements of an airfield. A series of technological challenges must be overcome to develop various categories of application for autonomous utility vehicles at airports. Given the peculiarities of an airport, these technological challenges largely go beyond the requirements of road traffic or use in other non-public areas. Five project partners have come together in this context and set up the “AirPortMover” project, which is being funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to the tune of EUR 3.3 million.

The aim of the project, which is running over 36 months, is to create a basic platform that can meet the specific requirements of airports, such as positioning and localisation on the airport apron, avoiding encounters and collisions with aircraft, taking particular account of objects suspended in the air (aircraft wings, engines) and the high safety requirements, variable digital maps with chronological definition of restricted areas (e.g. behind an aircraft engine), orientation in airport halls and integration into the operational processes of an airport. Starting from the basic platform, various designs are being tested and implemented for autonomous transport in three application scenarios on the site/apron of a commercial airport and a company airport.

Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH (Hamburg) is taking the lead in the project. Other project partners include Fraport AG (Frankfurt am Main), the Christian Albrecht University of Kiel (Kiel), Airbus Operations GmbH (Hamburg) and Hanseatische Fahrzeug Manufaktur GmbH (Holm). EurA AG has provided the project partners with considerable assistance in designing the project through its branch in Schleswig-Holstein.
