An outstanding hat-trick:
Hamburg/Überlingen, February 2022 - Hamburg-based lidar specialist Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH convinced the jury of the TOP 100 innovation competition for medium-sized companies for a third time. Following on from 2019 and 2020, Ibeo scored again in the categories of management, innovation climate, processes and organization, external orientation and innovation success and was thus able to compete successfully in the corporate class with more than 200 employees. On June 24, Ibeo will also be awarded for these achievements by the mentor of the competition in person, the science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar.
As a specialist for lidar sensors, the associated software and accompanying systems, Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH plays a decisive role in shaping the future of mobility. And it does so at speed and with a high density of innovations. In just three years, the company was able to more than double the number of employees at its Hamburg headquarters and at the locations in the Netherlands and the USA to now more than 400. By the end of 2022, around 500 employees will be working on the automation of vehicles. Then the first so-called solid-state sensors are also expected to go into mass production. These represent a small revolution on the way toward autonomous driving. While conventional lidar systems have previously relied on mirrors that are moved mechanically, the Ibeo engineers are working on a pure semiconductor solution. The new compact scanner is smaller, more robust and cheaper than its conventional predecessor and also offers a high resolution.
‘How much is a company focused on innovation? How consistently do its structures follow this goal? At TOP 100 we are exploring this,’ explains Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke, the scientific director of TOP 100. ‘The most innovative medium-sized companies receive the seal. It shows that you are superbly equipped for future challenges.’
‘The TOP 100 rating is a great confirmation for us that our chosen path is exactly right. At Ibeo, we not only develop the future of mobility with the most innovative technologies, we also do so in a completely innovative working environment. Flat hierarchies and a working atmosphere characterized by trust and reliability enable all employees to fully contribute and grow together,’ adds Dr. Ulrich Lages, CEO and founder Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH. ‘I would like to take this opportunity to expressly thank all my colleagues, whose innovative spirit and great commitment drive us all forward every day.’
TOP 100: the competition
Since 1993, Compamedia has awarded the TOP 100 seal to medium-sized companies for exceptional innovative strength and above-average innovation success. Since 2002, scientific direction of the awards has been in the hands of Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke. Franke is the founder and director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. With 25 research awards and more than 200 publications, he is one of the leading innovation researchers internationally. The core of the innovation competition is a scientific selection process in which the innovation researcher Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke and his team analyze the competing companies on the basis of over 100 innovation indicators. In essence, the TOP 100 analysis addresses the question of whether a company’s innovations are no more than a coincidental byproduct or are systematically planned and thus repeatable in the future. A special weighting is given to the question of whether and how new products and product improvements will prevail on the market.
Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH has established itself as a global technology leader for lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) sensors and the associated products and software tools. This technology is used as an assistance system in cars and in the field of autonomous driving. It is Ibeo’s goal to reinvent mobility by enabling cars to become cooperative partners in the driving process, so making transportation safer. In total, Ibeo employs more than 400 people at its sites in Hamburg (Germany), Eindhoven (Netherlands), and Detroit (USA). In 2021, AAC Technologies became a shareholder of Ibeo. Since 2016, the automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG has been a shareholder of Ibeo: initially via Zukunft Ventures GmbH, and since 2019 via ZF Automotive Germany GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of ZF. Ibeo celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018.
