Hamburg/Überlingen, 01.07.2019– The Hamburg-based LiDAR specialist Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH works on the technology for driverless cars and made the jump into the elite in the TOP 100 innovation competition, which has been held for the 26th time. Using a scientific system, TOP 100 rates the innovation management of medium-sized companies. In the independent selection process, the company with more than 350 employees impressed in particular with its climate of innovation. Ibeo was presented with the award on 28 June at a gala in the Frankfurt Jahrhunderthalle by the TV presenter and mentor of the competition Ranga Yogeshwar and its scientific director Prof. Nikolaus Franke.
Driver assistance systems give a warning if you drive too close to something or even carry out an emergency stop. Or they can reverse the car automatically into a tight space. Ibeo is developing systems of this sort based on laser technology which will act as the “sense organs” of vehicles. The English abbreviation for the laser scanners is “LiDAR” systems. The Hamburg-based company is currently working on the “ibeoNEXT 4D Solid State LiDAR”. While LiDAR systems currently work with mechanically operated mirrors, the innovator’s engineers are opting for a pure semi-conductor solution for ibeoNEXT. The new compact scanner is smaller and more robust. Another strength is its high resolution. While the laser scanners are the “eyes” of a car, as it were, Ibeo is also working on a “brain” for the next generation of vehicles: the environmental data that the LiDAR system acquires are continuously compared to orientation points on a digital map to determine the precise position of the car. This makes safe autonomous driving possible.
“The competition was particularly strong this year. The applicants included numerous world market leaders and “hidden champions”. The achievements in the areas of top management, climate of innovation, processes/organisation, external focus/open innovation and innovation successes were extremely impressive, however”, says the head of the study, Prof. Nikolaus Franke, Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Vienna University of Economics and Business.
“This rating as one of the TOP 100 innovators makes us proud and vindicates our strategy of continuing to follow the path we have taken”, adds Dr. Ulrich Lages, CEO and founder of Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH. “My particular thanks go to all the employees of Ibeo, who are working together on our vision of the safe roads of tomorrow. Without them, such a high level of innovation would not be possible in the first place.”
TOP 100: the competition
Compamedia has been awarding its TOP100 seal for particular strength in innovation and exceptional achievements in that area by medium-sized companies since 1993. It scientific leadership has been in the hands of Prof. Nikolaus Franke since 2002. Franke is the founder and chair of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Vienna University of Economics and Business. The mentor of the TOP 100 is the science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar. The project partners are the Fraunhofer Society and the BVMW. manager magazin, impulse and W&V support the comparison of businesses as media partners.
