According to current scientific studies, global warming is becoming a bigger problem. 2020 was one of the hottest years since the beginning of the weather records . This trend is still ongoing even though mobile work became a big part of our lifes and traveling was reduced to a minimum. But, due to the pandemic, new, more environmentally friendly alternatives have become apparent in many business areas: especially in the area of events.
We analyzed the environmental friendliness of our events. Here are our results:
But let's start with general knowledge:
According to investigations from MeetGreen, the CO₂ reduction due to virtual events is massive. For example, they analyzed the reduction of the event UN Global Compact Uniting Business Live 2020, which was more than 1.1 million kilograms of CO₂.
Factors, which are part of this reduction, are:
In the case of virtual events, only the energy consumption of the required servers causes CO₂ emissions.
As a company example - CES 2021
As well as in most other companies in 2020, almost all of Ibeo’s events took place digitally. A recent example is CES 2021, which was held online. We have calculated an approximate estimate of the CO₂ savings through the virtual participation.
For approximately 182,000 participants, the following CO₂ emissions result:
The total CO₂-emission for CES 2020 (in person): 351,000 t (this is a rough estimation for a better comparison)
The total CO₂-emission for CES 2021 (virtual): 1,022 t (roughly estimated comparison based on the data from BSR 2020 with an approximate calculation of the CO₂ consumption per participant multiplied by the day and number of participants)
Therefore, the total CO₂ savings of a digital CES are 349,978 t.
Let's summarize Ibeo’s CO₂ emission of the CES 2020:
|Activities analysed (CES 2020)||CO₂ emission|
|Flight from Germany (HAM) to Las Vegas (LAS) for seven people||39,222 kg CO₂|
|Flight from Detroit (DTW) to Las Vegas (LAS) and back two people||2.656 kg CO₂|
|Taxi drive from airport to hotel and vice versa||6,65 kg CO₂*|
|Stay at a Hotel for nine people||1252 kg CO₂**|
|Total||43.136 kg CO₂|
*Further drives aren’t included, because of the lacking information. Therefore, this analysis is based on minimum consumption.
So, all in all the CO₂ emission during CES 2020 is round about 43,136 kg. During the ongoing digital CES 2021, approximately 50 kg CO₂ emission for nine people were calculated. Therefore, Ibeo saved a total of 43,086 kg CO₂.
Plus, here are some more good news:
Ibeo is doing a good job with its webinars.
According to this article, the platform GoToMeeting, which is used to host the webinars, is one of the most data saving platforms .
What can employees do to reduce CO₂ at their work space?
Did you know...?
If the situation allows, Ibeo will of course take part in offline events again. Nonetheless, resources can also be saved in the future. Hybrid and digital concepts, for example, are ideal for this.
More environmentally friendly topics are coming soon to this blog. So stay tuned
Climate change is ongoing. The events sector also contributes to this development because it is closely linked to the travel and hotel industries and, therefore, has a wide reach. In this post, Ibeo has analyzed how environmentally friendly events, in which we participated, are.
To this day women are still underrepresented in STEM subjects. This article adressed one of the reasons for the complex issue. Furthermore, Julia Nitsch, one of Ibeos algorithm developers, will be introduced to you.
Ibeo stands for interculturality and internationality. In this article, we will show you how diversity and economic success are related and introduce you to two projects through which Ibeo is helping its international employees to integrate themselves in German culture.
