| | Ibeo successful as project manager for Intersafe project
Ibeo Automobile Sensor managed to complete the INTERSAFE project very successfully at the end of January 2007. Under the management of Kay Fürstenberg, Research Director at Ibeo Automobile Sensor GmbH, not only were all set targets fully achieved, the EU also stressed that the project results were particularly commendable and worthwhile.
INTERSAFE is a sub project of PReVENT, one of many research projects promoted within the 6th framework program of the EU and commenced in 2002. The main aim of the project was to increase safety at crossroads or intersections significantly and so prevent fatal accidents.
Collisions at intersections are generally known to be one of the most frequent types of car accidents.The INTERSAFE project has developed and tested a networked system between vehicles and infrastructure to increase safety here. Ibeo was completely ahead as the project manager. The technology leader in the area of automotive laser scanners supplied one project manager and 2 ALASCA sensors for the detection of cross and parallel traffic at crossroads or intersections. This means that the Laserscanner captures data at natural points of reference in the vehicle’s surrounding area such as e.g. traffic lights and traffic signs. At the same time any information on other road users is also analyzed. The Ibeo sensors are fully integrated into the design of the INTERSAFE vehicle, a VW Phaeton. Ibeo also supplied a new process for the detection of vehicles. Through a fusion of video and laser scanners in combination with a detailed map of the crossroad or intersection, high precision vehicle localization is achieved.
The Intersafe Phaeton
Depending on the situation the INTERSAFE driver assistance systems have two main functions: - Intersection assistant: Ibeo Laserscanner system detects, tracks and categorizes the road users located momentarily in the crossroad/intersection area. The system checks the situation according to speed and distance. In an unsafe traffic situation the driver is warned appropriately.
- Traffic light assistant: Depending on driving speed, distance to the traffic lights and timing of traffic light sequences (received via V21 communication) the danger of running a right light at the crossroads can be predicted. The driver is warned of an impending offence.
The operational capability of the INTERSAFE system was proven during sensor and system tests with the Ibeo Laserscanners. It is equally important for the system to convince to the car driver that: After a user test 16 subjects rated the systems as valuable aids which clearly relieve the driver and considerably improve traffic safety.
Besides Ibeo as project manager, many other well-known European car manufacturers and suppliers as well as numerous institutes were also involved. Volkswagen AG, BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH, Peugeot Citroen Automobiles SA, Renault, TRW Conekt, INRIA, FCS Simulator Systems, ika and Signalbau Huber.
