The vehicle's pitching motion poses a challenge to sensors installed in a car. An incorrect reading can easily occur, for example, if a measurement is taken as a tyre hits a pothole. The system could lose sight of relevant objects as a result.
The laser scanners produced by Ibeo Automobile Sensor, on the other hand, split the laser beam into four vertical layers. Distance measurements are taken independently for each of these layers with an aperture angle of 3.2°.
This allows any pitching of the vehicle, caused by an uneven surface or driving manoeuvres such as braking and accelerating, to be fully compensated.
