The AEB application developed by Ibeo seeks to save lives without wresting control from the driver. The built-in laser scanner reliably detects and recognises the outline of all stationary and moving obstacles in front of the car. But the AEB system does not intervene until the driver is no longer able to avoid a collision. The scanner's broad horizontal field of vision allows the situation to be assessed quickly and comprehensibly, even if the extent of overlap with the target is minimal. The calculation takes account of the current vehicle path and the options for avertive manoeuvres to the left or right. The vehicle is brought to a standstill by applying maximum braking pressure.
By substantially reducing the impact velocity, this function significantly mitigates the consequences of an accident for all those involved, and can prevent road deaths.
